This month I wanted to try and do a wrap-up post. I always like reading everyone’s end-of-month recaps and see what they’ve read and what posts they’ve enjoyed, but I’ve never been drawn to write such a post of my own—whether it’s because I feel like I don’t have as many books to talk about or for another reason, I’m not sure. However, I’ve decided that I’d give this type of post a fair shot, so here we go!
What I Read
What We Devour by Linsey Miller
After struggling with this book for two very longs months, I finally finished it in August. I read this as an ARC, and that’s the only reason I didn’t DNF it. This kept putting me in somewhat of a slump every single time I picked it up, and I’m not even sure how I managed to finish it. Regardless, I read only the last 40% of this book in August, and it still took me the entire month. This was, sadly, a huge disappointment for me.
If you want to read more of my in-depth thoughts, you can read my full review here.
Despite this rocky start to the month, the next book I picked up was a total change of shift and it was one that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The Girls Are Never Gone by Sarah Glenn Marsh
I’m not sure where to start with this, but if you follow me on twitter, you’ll have for sure heard me rant about this book by now. This book was simply fantastic and I had a great time reading it—by great time I mean that I was terrified the whole time. Despite not being a regular horror reader (I’m a scaredy cat) it’s a genre I really enjoy when done right, and this was certainly done right.
I have a whole post for this book here, so make sure to read that if you want to hear more about this!
Eros/Psyche by Maria Llovet
This was an impulse read from the “Read Now” section from NetGalley, but it was quite a fun time. This was a very short dark academia graphic novel. I read it in under an hour and it was great. The art on the cover was what initially intrigued me, so I’m happy I gave it a go and enjoyed an entire graphic novel filled with this art.
Here’s my review, in case you’re interested to learn more about this dark academia!
Finally, I got the chance to read one of my most highly anticipated books of the year:
How We Fall Apart by Katie Zhao
If you’re a blogger and you’ve talked about this book before, I’ve probably (almost certainly) left a comment on your post telling you how much I was anticipating this book. Dark academia has kinda become “my thing” and this particular one was highly enjoyable. I read the entire second half of this book in one sitting so I think we can conclude I was indeed hooked.
I wrote a review which you can check out here if you want to learn more about this!
What I Wrote
I don’t want to make this section too long, so I’ll just share my top two favourite posts I wrote this month:
- 8 Sapphic Adult Book Recommendations: Pretty self-explanatory, I recommended some of my favourite sapphic adult books.
- Favourite Quotes: I discussed the concept of “favourite quotes” and gave some examples of my favourites.
Blog Posts I Loved
I try to read as many blog posts as I can each month, which is great… Until I have to narrow them down to a few. Here are some (definitely not all) of my August favourites.
First things first, Ahaana @ Windows to Worlds, Bertie @ Luminosity Library, and Phoenix @ Books with Wings celebrated their one-year blog anniversaries and they all had some things to share.
Veronika @ Wordy and Whimsical recommended some books based on her favourite musicals. I not only got book recommendations but also musical ones! And Sabrina @ Wordy and Whimsical discussed why she enjoys reading multiple books at once.
Line @ First Line Reader discussed the “Chosen One” trope and she had some great points to make.
Sara @ Lyrical Reads did a great interview with author Katie Zhao!
Morgan @ Morgan is Reading Again shared their experience navigating social media.
Bertie @ Luminosity Library continued with their Ableist Tropes 101 series, this time touching on “Inspiration Porn”.
Zoë @ Reading by the Moonlight shared how she got over a six-month reading slump! Definitely a helpful post.
Aisling @ Aisling Hamill discussed her reasons for no longer reading novellas, and her arguments were quite compelling.
Florence @ Miscellany Pages and Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books shared some very useful tips on how to blog stress-free and how to have a successful blog respectively.
Alix @ Alix Reads Books discussed binge-reading. She had some great arguments both for and against it.
Birdie @ Birdie’s Booktopia shared a very extensive list of 2022 debuts—and increased my TBR in the process.
Naemi @ A Book Owl’s Corner discussed the benefits of reading books in foreign languages, a fascinating topic in my opinion!
And finally, Phoenix @ Books with Wings talked about the importance of having sports in books.
Did you have a good reading month? What was your favourite book you read in August?
Nice wrap-up! My favorite book from August was Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir!

I just looked it up and although I’m not the biggest fan of sci-fi it sounds quite intriguing! I’m glad you enjoyed it!

That “The Girls Are Never Gone” cover already has me thoroughly creeped out 🤣 As an absolute scaredy cat when it comes to horror, I think I’ll steer clear, but I’m glad you enjoyed it so much!
I’m very interested in “How We Fall Apart”, though, so it’s nice to hear your positive thoughts!
And thanks so much for the shout-out! 😊

I’m a scaredy cat myself but I did truly enjoy it even though I was very spooked (and still am 😂). How We Fall Apart was also a joy to read!
You’re welcome, I’ve really been enjoying your posts, I can’t wait to read more!

Loved reading your wrap-up and I’m glad you enjoyed my binge-reading post! 😅 August was a pretty good reading month for me and if I had to pick a fav I’d choose either Daisy Jones & The Six or Renegades 🙂

I really did! Oh, I read Daisy Jones a while back and although it wasn’t my favourite book it still was a fun time. I’m glad you had a good reading month, Alix!

It’s so sad to see how much What We Devour caused you to struggle! Especially with that awesome cover. Glad you have finally got that out of the way!
Horror is definitely not my genre either, but if you say The Girls Are Never Gone is good… Well, I’ll have to check out your full post for it, haha.
Great wrap up and thanks for sharing our posts! 🙂

It’s a shame really, because the concept sounded really interesting, but the execution really wasn’t for me…
I hope I can convince you to try to read The Girls Are Never Gone 🤞 it was truly an amazing read!
And of course, I enjoyed them a lot so I had to share 😊
