“The Secret History” was the first song—and book—that came to mind. It’s a gorgeous piece by Kerry Muzzey, played by The Chamber Orchestra of London, that’s been on my most played songs list for two consecutive years. I came across it after reading Donna Tartt’s The Secret History and I thought it perfectly fit the atmosphere of the book.

Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality they slip gradually from obsession to corruption and betrayal, and at last—inexorably—into evil.

You drive me crazy, Moth Man
Never ceasing to amaze me
But you don't care to even know who I am
And it's alright

This was the hardest prompt to fulfill, because the books that I have the most songs associated to I already mentioned in other questions. In the end I decided to opt for “Moth Man” by Dirty Bynum, which always reminds me of Aveda Vice’s Feed. I’m pretty sure I had this song on loop while reading this novella, and it was a great time. Sidenote to mention that Pye is non-binary so the title of the song doesn’t actually fit perfectly!

Avirin has a dirty little secret. She hates her fae coworker – but that’s no surprise. Not when Pye’s tattoos and easy-going attitude clash with her pencil skirts and rigid expectations. Those strict rules help her maintain a corporate appearance so no one catches onto the truth of what she is…

A succubus, secretly scheduling the feedings she needs to survive. Imagine her shock to find Pye on her doorstep offering their services. Avirin should refuse, but the need to feed is growing stronger…and once she gets a taste of him, she’s not sure her hunger will be sated by anything less than his body against hers

I still got so many unsaid things that I wanna say
And I just can't wait another day
I wish she knew
I still wait up wondering if she will remember me
But there's no way for me to know

I could talk about many books here, but my heart is telling me to go with McFly’s autobiography McFly: Unsaid Things… Our Story. McFly is one of my absolute favourite bands, so I of course had to take the opportunity to bring them up. And it’s only fitting that I chose the song that gives name to this autobiography, “Unsaid Things”.

In 2003, Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Harry Judd and Dougie Poynter came together and formed what would become one of the most popular and successful bands in the UK. Just teenagers at the time, they were catapulted into the limelight and had to adapt quickly to their new-found fame – and everything that came with it. Now, at last, they have decided to tell their story, in full and revealing detail.

Speaking with candour and their trademark humour, Tom, Danny, Harry and Dougie share both the stories of their own lives and that of McFly. They give their personal insights into their contrasting childhoods, the individual paths that led them to the band, the struggles they have each overcome, their love lives and, of course, their music.

Love of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

So, back in 2015 when I first read The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller and it became my all-time favourite book, I made an entire playlist for it—which you can listen to here if, for some reason, you’re interested. That means that choosing a single song for this prompt is very hard since there are 14 songs out in the world that always remind me of Patroclus and Achilles. After much debating I’ve decided to go with “I Will Follow You into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie because the lyrics simply fit to perfection.

Achilles, “the best of all the Greeks,” son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus, is strong, swift, and beautiful, irresistible to all who meet him. Patroclus is an awkward young prince, exiled from his homeland after an act of shocking violence. Brought together by chance, they forge an inseparable bond, despite risking the gods’ wrath.

They are trained by the centaur Chiron in the arts of war and medicine, but when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name.

Oh baby, don't you know I suffer?
Oh baby, can you hear me moan?
You caught me under false pretenses
How long before you let me go?

I must go with Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I’ve said it time and time again, but the Twilight soundtrack is simply on another level. I have to thank this book and film for plenty of things, and one of those is introducing me to the world of pop punk. Now, choosing a single song from that amazing soundtrack is hard but I feel I need to go with “Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse because it is not only a brilliant song but it also appears in what is one of the best scenes ever.

About three things I was absolutely positive.

First, Edward was a vampire.

Second, there was a part of him—and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be—that thirsted for my blood.

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

I Tag:

As per usual, don’t feel like you need to do this, but I’d really love reading your answers and hopefully discovering new artists and songs as well as books.

Have you read the books I talked about? What was your favourite song? Did you know them all?

See you next time, Maria

  1. Guess who just rode the train home for Easter break, saw this post, realized she had forgotten to take her headphones with her, and had to wait agonous hours to finally read this because of course she had to listen to the music but was way too scared of judgy people on the train to do it without headphones on? If you guessed me, then you’re spot on 😂😁

But obviously, I loved this post! The Secret History is going straight onto my own playlist – HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS EXISTED?!? 🤯🥰 – and you’ve made me realize that I apparently never paid much attention to Twilight’s soundtrack because I could have sworn I never heard that Muse song before, either 😅 Whoops!

Also, even though I didn’t like Circe much, you pairing The Song of Achilles with I Will Follow You Into the Dark has me thinking I might need to give Madeline Miller another chance…

    1. I can feel your suffering from here 😂

That entire album where The Secret History is from is absolutely fantastic! Also, how is it possible that you don’t remember that song????????? It’s the baseball scene!!!

I love The Song of Achilles a whole lot, but Circe also wasn’t my favourite. I have a feeling you’d also like TSOA more if I’m honest. And believe me, that song fits it perfectly.

      1. Well, maybe that’s the reason behind my ignorance – I’m afraid I actually don’t care all that much about the baseball scene 😅🙈 And I also don’t think I’ve ever watched a Twilight movie in a non-hysterical mood, since my viewing experience always consisted of constant sarcastic sibling commentary on everything going on in it 🤣 Honestly, between our comments on how Bella uses ketchup and how Robert Pattinson looks like he didn’t wash his hair for months before filming, it is highly possible I didn’t even hear much of the music… 😁

But you’ve certainly gotten me a lot more intrigued about The Song of Achilles now!

  2. I just have to start by applauding the stroke of genius that put Muse and the legendary baseball scene into this post! I had to go watch it again and it’s still good, and the song is obviously still killer 😄

However, that was about all that I was familiar with in this post. I have read The Song of Achilles too of course, and that song has some very fitting lyrics! I also didn’t know about The Secret History one because I never listen to that kind of music but it was very beautiful and half convinced me I need to read the book 😄 But thanks for doing the tag! Loved reading your answers!

  3. this tag was so interesting, thank you for putting it on my radar! as someone who loves music AND books, it seems perfect!

i don’t think i know many songs and books that share a title tho🤔 unless you count books that were purposely named after songs, like maureen goo’s the way you make me feel or i believe in a thing called love.

i love that you mentioned mcfly haha my sister was a huge fan of theirs and i definitely grew up listening to a bunch of their music by association! they definitely have a lot of great hits hahah

i LOVE the twilight soundtrack so much! it’s perfect for whenever the weather is rainy and moody. however, my favorite song is hearing damage from new moon. it’s the song that plays when the wolves are hunting victoria and that entire sequence is just so stunning hahah. twilight is definitely a problematic franchise, but you can not argue that the soundtrack is perfection!

thank you So much for tagging me, i am so excited to come up with answers for these questions!

    1. Honestly, finding a book and song that share a title would’ve been very hard if not for that one! I tried checking whether I knew others but no luck.

Ooh, it’s so exciting that you know mcfly! I find that not many people have heard their music on here!

Twilight definitely has a top-notch soundtrack and Hearing Damage is also fantastic.

I’m super excited to read your answers to this!
